Equity & Advocacy
Since 2024 I have been volunteering with Land Together, a garden-based rehabilitation program in correctional facilities throughout California.
In collaboration with Land Together and colleagues at UC Davis Center for Community and Citizen Science (UCD CCS), I designed and implemented a climate-focused Citizen Science project with program participants at Avenal State Prison.
We installed a mini weather station in the prison garden:
- Program participants collect weekly precipitation measurements (modeled on the CoCoRaHS data collection and using standard precipitation gauge)
- Temperature measurements are continuously recorded
The project is a trial run to test feasibility and participant interest in Land Together programming. Incorporating climate science within the rehabilitation curriculum can add to the environmental educational components of the program and interaction with the garden.
In addition to the Citizen Science project, I assist in facilitating the rehabilitation program and teach environmental science in the program's curriculum.
